I am of course a massive vintage fashion fan and I love the 1950s in particular so to have been invited to take a look at this collection was a real treat. I also took my mother in law with me who shares my love of Hepburn and we ended up spending at least an hour going through all the Hepburn outfits, discussing the films and how the dresses must of been made and how romantic the time was. It was a fabulous day out and we both felt rather privileged to get so up close with some of Hepburn's most famous vintage dresses.
The dresses above are just a taster of the Audrey Heburn dress collection. We saw the famous Givenchy haute couture black lace dress worn by Audrey in "How to steal a million", 1966. This dress is estimated to sell for over £20000! (See pictured bottom right). The wedding dress was designed for Audrey for her marriage to James Hanson in 1952, the same year Hepburn was making "Roman Holiday". This marriage never happened and Audrey asked the Fontana sisters who designed the dress to give the dress away. The lucky Italian girl who did get to wear this amazing bridal gown carefully stored the dress away for decades untill one of the Fontana sisters traced the vintage gown for an exhibition of their work.
Dress from the film "Love in the afternoon"The best thing about the exhibit apart from the amazing Audrey Hepburn dresses and outfits, was all the details that had gone into creating this fabulous vintage dress exhibit. There were beautiful archived pictures that I had never seen before hung around the room and the catalogue was full of information about Audrey Hepburn and the dresses she had worn. Every dress had a story and Kerry Taylor and her team must have put their all into researching the dress, the film, the decade and Audrey's life.
I secretly hope that the whole collection gets bought for a museum as it seems such a shame to split this collection up and I know that you all want to see it so it would be amazing if the dresses could be shown in all their glory to all Audrey Hepburn fans.
If you love Audrey Hepburn and the glamour of old Hollywood you may be very excited about my other news; London's V&A museum is showcasing dresses worn by Grace Kelly in 2010. From April 17th the V&A will open their doors and display some of the most famous dresses worn by Grace Kelly. I am very excited and will be there with my prom dress on!
