Hooked on Hermes?

Yesterday an anonymous bidder became the proud owner of a second hand Hermes Birkin Bag for the bargain price of £49,000! The Birkin Bag is not just any bag it is THE handbag. There is currently a six year waiting list to get your very own Birkin. A list many A-Listers have signed up for obviously as the Hermes Birkin will set you back a pretty penny. Buying a Birkin or saving up for a Mortgage deposit? Think the mortgage will be cheaper, but where will your phone, keys and lipgloss go? Decisions.
Victoria Beckham collects Birkins and is rumoured to have over 100 worth over 1.5 million pounds. Nutso. Lady Gaga recently defaced one which seems crazy to me if this was supposed to be a huge point. Gaga could of bought world peace instead for the price no?
So what is it about the Hermes Birkin? Why are people buying Birkins for £49k in a recession?
‘The most sought after bags are always the Birkins and Kellys (named after actresses Jane Birkin and Grace Kelly),’ says Pat Frost, Christie’s director of fashion and textiles.
‘The really expensive bags are the ones made of exotic leathers: crocodile, lizard, alligator and ostrich. With the croc bags, which command the very highest prices, the paler the colour, the more the bag is worth because it’s extremely hard to dye the skins successfully.'

Unlike skinny V people are looking for 'the one', the one and only Birkin that they can eventually hand down to children etc. Buying a Birkin is not a monthly purchase it is an investment. Birkins are created to perfection and are worked on by hand by tradesman who have been doing it for 30 years. A Birkin will always be in style with its classic shape and functionality. A Birkin does not have to rely or change design based on trends and pop culture. Apart from the materials, labour and crocodile Dundee the story behind the Birkin Bag is so cinderella it will make you sick. Apparently once upon a time in the eighties Jane Birkin was on a flight to London and was having trouble with her straw handbag as all her bags belongings were escaping all over the place and was complaining to the gentleman next to her about it, explaining how good it would be if she had a Hermes bag created for her referring to Grace Kelly's "Kelly Bag". That very gentleman was none other than Hermes boss Jean-Louis Dumas. Who promptly started work on the Hermes Birkin Bag. So there you have it.
I am a huge bag fan....for some dolls it is shoes, but not for me. I love handbags and have always dreamed of owning a classic like a Hermes Kelly Bag or a Chanel 1.55 and I may now be adding a Birkin to that list. A broad can dream can't she?
Between Mulberry's 38% rise in profits this year thanks to Alexa Chung's 'Alexa Bag' at £700 and the Christies sale it seems that the ladies like their handbags and hell no a recession will not get in their way of buying some expensive arm candy. What do you think? Do you think it is insensitive to be spending so much money on a bag during a recession? Or do you care less about the cash and more about the flash?

I Have No Future?

So you all must know by now I am living in Singapore right? Yeah? Well it has been a busy first few weeks hence blog blockage and silencio. I have been hunting for the perfect condo, eating all that Sing City puts in front of me and exploring all that the red dot island has to offer. So I am sorry for my less than less posts :( Business will be back to usual as soon as possible I promise. I move in this week so life will become a little clearer and less about Ikea! The vintage arrived last week too so I am so excited to start uploading my fabulous new vintage frocks to the shop which by the way is still having and going through its face lift. It will be well worth the wait ladies!
When I am not in Ikea or other various furniture stores in Singapore I am having a lot of fun meeting new people, eating amazing food and sipping Singapore Slings. Thought I would share this picture from my weekend...I apparently have no future as the mouth was broken? That or I had my hand in the wrong end or something?
