I don't know if I am late to the party,(where shall I put my coat?) but did you know that a remake is in the works for Cleopatra?
David Fincher (The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Fight Club) is said to be remaking the 1963 classic starring Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. Not only is another classic movie being remade and retold, but Angelina Jolie has been picked to play Cleopatra! First thing....predictable, secondly...what happened to the good ole days where people made entertaining original movies?
If I bump into another person who loved Mark Wahlberg in The Italian Job or Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka I think I may lose it. (I should add the people in question no nothing of Sir Michael Caine or Gene Wilder and were born before 85' - to add to my point).
I would love to know where you all stand on the Cleopatra remake? Are you excited? Should I be excited a whole new Bieber generation gets to see "Cleopatra?"
I do not think of myself as an authority on film, but I enjoy classic movies, good movies, well written movies, well acted movies, iconic movies like Cleopatra which will forever stand the test of time and simply need not to be touched.

Hmmmm. Personally - I always view remakes as completely new films. YES - i DO prefer the "new" Charlie & The Choc Fac - because I feel it truer to the book. That does not mean I hold my love for childhood classic Gene Wilder adaptation in any lower an esteem. It makes me feel warm an cosy when I see it. I would view a remake of The Goonies or The Blues Brothers in the same way - NOT to be compared to the original.
ReplyDeleteI think AJ is pretty much a perfect contender to play Cleopatra. She has that inner prowess and outer power to pull it off. But then - I quite like her - so I might be biased.
Ps) I was born in 1980 *wink*
I don't think for a moment that Angelina could step into Liz Taylor's fabulous shoes. Liz Taylor was was an iconic beauty as well as being both powerful and alluring in that role. If Angelina can bring a different slant to the part, it might work, but it would be a very different film and people will always compare remakes.
ReplyDeleteNo. I'm not excited by the prospect even though I do like Angelina. It won't be a patch on the original. xx
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of old movies and their stars such as Elizabeth taylor but I can't help getting excited about the possible costumes for a new Cleopatra.
ReplyDeleteOh god.what a travesty.am also totally anti-remake; there'll spend a fortune on the special effects/sets/costumes etc and probably zilch on the script and it'll be awful. How egocentric are these people-directors and stars like Angelina, that they think they can do it better than the original?!Sad times indeed.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a remake of the Elizabeth Taylor film, it's an entirely new film about Cleopatra.
ReplyDeleteI always prefer the original films, without question, and think it's a bit unoriginal to just remake old titles. Plus the movie stars of the past were so much more exciting!

Wowee lots of opinions...thanks gals xxx
ReplyDeleteWell, seeing as a good deal of films I love from the '50s are remakes themselves, I feel I oughtn't get too fussed about them. ;] I get more annoyed when the film that is being remade was original in itself (I mean, Cleopatra was hardly an original concept - plays, books, etc. had been written on her story before, just as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was adapted from the book, rather than taking from the first film, which I do prefer, to be honest - the first film, not Tim Burton's). I can be precious about remakes but I try not to be. I don't think the classic era of film was always that original (I mentioned the remakes already) and Hollywood just likes to update stories for new generations, I guess. I just don't like when the stories get dumbed down - there were an AWFUL lot of trashy films made 50, 60, 70 years ago but Hollywood also churned out a lot of films that made you think and engage in a way I don't often see come out of Hollywood, today. (Which is why I watch a lot of non-mainstream etc films).
ReplyDeleteI'd be interested to see Fincher's take on the story as he's such a diverse director! And I'm really looking forward to seeing his version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
So, I guess I'm on the fence, as I often am. ;]

Will she be using her Russian accent (!?!) as in Alexander?
ReplyDeletejelek, kek mukaku Rini. :p
ReplyDeletewow
ReplyDeleteDavid Fincher is a great director, so certainly it has potential. I just finished the recent Cleopatra biography by Stacy Schiff, so I am especially interested in separating the myth from the real story. Casting Angelina makes me worry it's going to be just a big glitzy production, not so interested in cutting through the stereotypes.
